Tomb Raider Reportedly Sold to Amazon for $600 Million

The Tomb Raider franchise has been sold to Amazon for a reported $600 million, although it is assumed this figure includes a combination of rights to the IP and commitments to the previously announced TV series and future movies. While Embracer Group no longer own the IP, Amazon still wishes to create video games in the future too.

Amazon intends to create a “Marvel-like franchise” out of Tomb Raider

Amazon apparently wants to turn Tomb Raider into a connected world that includes a new feature film, the TV series from Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and at least one game. Marvel has already managed to accomplish this, and Amazon is looking toward that franchise for its inspiration according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The rights to Tomb Raider were sold to Amazon for a reported $600 million “overall package”, claims Fellowship of Fans. While the meaning of “overall package” is unclear, it is unlikely to just include the rights to the IP. Multiple reports state these were sold for a lower figure than the $250 million Amazon spent on the Lord of the Rings franchise. Instead, the package is believed to include commitments to future media too and they have already vowed to publish Crystal Dynamics’ upcoming game. Amazon is yet to comment on the reports.

Tomb Raider TV Series Reportedly Heading to Amazon

A Tomb Raider TV series is reportedly in the early development stages for Amazon. The reports claimed that Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, Killing Eve) will be writing the script alongside her other projects after she renewed her deal with Amazon for another three years, but she will not have a starring role.

The TV series may tie-in to the new Tomb Raider game

Whether the TV series will draw inspiration from any of the current Tomb Raider video games is unknown, although a brand new game is in development and will be published by Amazon rather than Embracer Group. The game will reportedly be revealed later this year after the majority of developer Crystal Dynamics staff were moved away from Marvel’s Avengers and it remains to be seen whether it will tie-in to the new TV series in any way.

The actress who may step into the role of Lara Croft is currently unknown. According to sources who spoke to The Hollywood Reporter, Waller-Bridge will not be taking an acting role on the series in any form despite her previous experience, although she will assume the role of Executive Producer too. Ryan Andolina and Amanda Greenblatt, who recently left roles at Amazon to form their own production company, will also be Executive Producers alongside Dmitri Johnson.

Amazon’s Fallout TV Series Will Tell an Original Story Set in the Same Universe as the Games

The Fallout TV series won’t have many familiar faces if any. Unlike HBO’s The Last of Us and Paramount’s Halo, Amazon’s production won’t adapt an existing story. Instead, it’ll take place in a part of the world map that Fallout players haven’t experienced but will find intimately familiar.

On Lex Fridman’s podcast, Executive Producer Todd Howard stated:

Let’s tell a story here that fits in the world that we have built, doesn’t break any of the rules, can reference things in the games, but isn’t a retelling of the games. It exists in the same world but is its own unique thing, so it adds to it. While also, people who haven’t played the games, who can’t experience how crazy cool Fallout is, can watch the series.

Howard said in the past that Bethesda had been approached by studios wanting to adapt the story of Fallout 3 or 4 into a movie. However, he’s more excited to do something that’s set in the same universe but separate from any previous game’s narrative.

So far, we have yet to learn much about the Fallout Amazon series. Leaks show that at least part of it will occur in Vault 32. We can assume that some shenanigans will happen there, leading to the protagonist(s) needing to head out into the wasteland to find their fortune.
