What’s new in the Resident Evil 2, 3, and 7 next-gen upgrades?

The new updates for Resident Evil 2, 3, and 7 focus add ray-tracing, support for higher frame rates, and 3D audio. The PS5 version also brings DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.

Unfortunately, Capcom didn’t go into much detail on the next-gen upgrades. We know the basics, but it’s not clear what’s changed under the hood. The PC version has moved to DirectX 12 only, and the system requirements have been updated, but we don’t have any hard details on what’s improved.

I’m most excited to see what ray-tracing can do for the games. The lighting is one of the most pivotal parts of Resident Evil’s environmental design, and it’ll be interesting to see how Capcom implements the enhanced illumination. Hopefully, it doesn’t ruin the ambiance that’s already proven to be a hit with fans.

Unfortunately, my biggest wish for these next-gen updates was absent. I had hoped that Capcom might have a surprise director’s cut for Resident Evil 3 that fixes some of the issues with that game. I knew it was a long shot, but I’m still disappointed. However, despite its shortcomings, it’s still worth playing. I’ll inevitably give it another run-through to check out the improvements.

In other news, Kojima will continue to work with Sony despite his deal with Xbox, and a Dragon Age animated series is heading to Netflix.

The likelihood of Resident Evil 2, 3, and 7 releasing soon on PS5

Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 7: Biohazard are all due to be released on PlayStation 5 in 2022. While some PSN backend listings also include a release date, these three did not have a release window as spotted by PlayStation Game Size on Twitter (thanks Reddit). However, Capcom is due to have a Showcase at 3 PM PT on June 13 that will have 35 minutes of news and in-depth updates on previously announced Capcom titles; players are hoping that these three games will be amongst those titles to get more news such as a release date.

We do know the download sizes for two of the three PS5 games, though. Resident Evil 2 will be 21.834 GB without a day one update, while Resident Evil 3 is sized at 20.480 GB. PlayStation Game Size couldn’t find a size for Resident Evil 7 but did manage to find two versions of the game: the standard edition and the Gold Edition. If this is identical to the PS4 version of the game, the Gold Edition will include the Banned Footage Vol. 1 and 2 DLCs as well as the End of Zoe and Not a Hero epilogue episodes.

Those of you who already own the PS4 version of any of the games will automatically receive a free PS5 upgrade. This means it’s probably worth mentioning that Resident Evil Raccoon City Edition, which includes Resident Evil 2 and 3, is on sale at 60% off. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard Gold Edition is on sale at 50% off. Both offers will expire this week so make sure to grab them if you’re wanting a cheap upgrade.

In other news, Asian PS Plus subscribers have been on the wrong end of Sony’s pricing issues again when they received compensation worth just 10 cents instead of $10. Elsewhere, the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II open multiplayer beta will arrive on PS4 and PS5 first.

Resident Evil PS5 upgrades will allow players to carry over DLC

Capcom previously announced that the DLC that comes with Resident Evil 7’s Gold Edition can be carried over to next-gen platforms alongside save data. Now, it has confirmed that DLC purchased separately for any of the aforementioned games will carry over as well.

We’ve got a few additional updates on the upcoming next-gen upgrades for Resident Evil 7, Resident Evil 2, and Resident Evil 3 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S! Let’s talk about what carries over and how you can upgrade at no additional cost.

It goes without saying that if you currently own Resident Evil 2, 3, and/or 7 on disc, you will need a PS5 with a disc drive to pop your copy in and claim the digital download. This doesn’t mean that last-gen digital editions aren’t eligible for an upgrade, however. All versions of the games purchased on the PS4 can be upgraded. As far as physical editions are concerned, Capcom said that they “aren’t planned right now,” indicating that it might consider packaging all three games on a disc later.

We’ll update our readers when we have more information. A release date for the upgrades has yet to be announced.

In other news, Sony has filed a fresh trademark for Knack and everyone thinks we’re getting Knack 3. And rumors are swirling that the company has some big PlayStation announcements planned for this week.

Resident Evil 2, 3, and 7 PS4 owners can upgrade for free

Those who already own Resident Evil 2, 3, or 7 on PS4 will be able to snag the PS5 upgrades for free. Add the save data transfer on top and this deal isn’t one you wanna miss. The games’ next-gen versions will offer “cutting-edge features” such as ray-tracing, high frame rate, and 3D audio. On the PS5 specifically, you’ll get DualSense support for haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.

A release date has yet to be announced but Capcom did provide a general release window of 2022. We’ll update our readers when we have more information about the upgrades and save transfers.

Opinion: Here’s hoping PS4 to PS5 transfers aren’t broken

Zarmena writes… PlayStation’s infrastructure has been notoriously finicky when it comes to PS4 to PS5 upgrades and data transfers so here’s hoping Resident Evil 2, 3, and 7 transfers aren’t yet another embarrassment for the company and a headache for players. I can’t stress enough that Sony needs a solution similar to Microsoft’s Smart Delivery especially now that we’re more than a year into the current gen.

In other news, PlayStation Store’s Mega March promotion kicks off today with another round of discounts, and PS5 shortages have resulted in Xbox Series X/S outselling the console for the first time in Europe.

Will those who own Resident Evil 2, 3, and 7 on PS4 get a free upgrade to PS5?

Fortunately, those that already own Resident Evil 2, 3, or 7 on PS4 will get a free upgrade to the PS5 version. However, The press release announcing the enhancements didn’t specify whether save files will be compatible with the new versions or not.

Of all the upgrades the titles are seeing, we’re most looking forward to ray tracing. The lighting in all three titles is spectacular, and seeing real-time reflections will only add to the spooky ambiance.

Unfortunately, Capcom didn’t announce any new content for any of the three games. Hopefully, the games will at least come with their DLC. Pricing info and the release date are unavailable as of now, and the only hint we have at launch timing is that it’ll be “later this year.”

In addition to the PS5, the Xbox Series X|S and PC will get the current-gen upgrade simultaneously.

Opinion: RE 2 and 3 deserve new content

When I first saw this announcement, I hoped these would be Director’s Cuts. The Resident Evil 2 remake is a masterpiece, but its B scenarios were lackluster and could be expanded. Resident Evil 3, on the other hand, is missing a ton of content from the original and could use a complete overhaul. I’d love to see Capcom bring back the Live Selection system to Resident Evil 3 and readd the Clock Tower, Park, and Dead Factory along with the randomization aspects that made the original so replayable. Even if the director’s cut material was sold as DLC, I think fans would love the opportunity to see these games live up to their potential.
