EA has confirmed the name of the next chapter in the Star Wars Jedi franchise. Officially called Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, the third person, narrative-driven action-adventure PS5 game takes place after the events of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and features the return of Cal Kestis and his robot companion BD-1.

What we know about Star Wars Jedi: Survivor on PS5

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor takes place five years after the events of Fallen Order. Still pursued by the Empire, Cal and BD-1 need to stay ahead of them if he’s to continue to be one of the last remaining Jedi in the galaxy. The duo won’t be alone, though, as they’ll meet plenty of allies along the way. One of those might have something to do with the mysterious figure in the bacta tank in the trailer. Game Director Stig Asmussen explained how Respawn is improving upon the gameplay of the original title:

Even before completing Jedi: Fallen Order, our team had a vision of how to carry the adventure for Cal, BD, and the crew into the sequel. For Jedi: Survivor, we are working in lockstep with Lucasfilm Games to build on the legacy of Jedi: Fallen Order. We’re leveraging advanced technology to create more dynamic Jedi combat and cinematic storytelling to expand on Cal’s story as he matures and survives during the dark times.

The upcoming game is being developed for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (it will not be available on last-gen consoles) and is currently targeting a release window of 2023. More news is promised “later this year”.

In other news, a release date for Stray may have leaked on the PlayStation Database and, if true, we may see the game at the upcoming State of Play show next week. Elsewhere, The Callisto Protocol is no longer set in the same universe as PUBG.

The next Star Wars Jedi game doesn’t actually have an official name yet, but most people have been referring to it as Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2. According to the latest rumor, the game will actually be called Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and it will be released at some point during the first three months of 2023.

An official name for Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2

EA and developer Respawn have only ever referred to the game as the next Star Wars Jedi title. However, Jeff Grubb claimed on his most recent Grubbsnax podcast to have heard the official title for the game. He nearly got away without leaking the title until Giant Bomb community members colonelsanders21 guessed it right at the end of the show. Apparently, the actual name of the game will be Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, although Grubb didn’t elaborate any further. You can see the full podcast below.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is expected to be released during the first three months of 2023. The game was initially intended to be released between October and December 2022 but was delayed. Grubb had previously claimed the mysterious “major IP” that was listed in EA’s financial earnings presentation was Survivor. This is one of five games scheduled to be released during the final quarter alongside a new PGA Tour game, Super Mega Baseball 4, Dead Space Remake, and an unknown “partner title”. EA is yet to confirm either the game’s name or the release window, so take this with a pinch of salt until they do make a statement.

In other news, Square Enix will focus on a “major franchise” this year, believed to be Final Fantasy seeing as it is the 35th anniversary of the first game. Elsewhere, SEGA is planning to release more remakes and remasters over the next financial year.

According to a new report, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2 will only release on the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, skipping the good ol’ PS4 and Xbox One. That’s according to VentureBeat journalist and insider Jeff Grubb, who revealed this tidbit of information in his premium Grubbsnax show. We had previously only heard speculations of the game skipping last-gen consoles based on its rumored release window.

When is Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2 expected to release?

Grubb reiterated in his show that Respawn Entertainment and Electronic Arts are targeting a release window of 2023. Additionally, the game’s subtitle might undergo a change and it’s possible that it won’t be titled Fallen Order at all.

Notwithstanding supply issues, a current-gen only release makes sense since we’re well into the cycle. If previous reports are to be believed, EA will reveal Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2 (or whatever it’ll be called) by summer 2022 at the latest.

Opinion: It was good while it lasted but it’s time to let go

Zarmena writes… I truly sympathize with people who still haven’t been able to snag a PS5 and/or Xbox Series X/S but that’s hardly the fault of development studios who have repeatedly said that they are often bogged by hardware constraints when developing for last-gen consoles. Getting a game to work on a PS4 and Xbox One while simultaneously ensuring that no corners are cut on the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S doesn’t seem like an easy feat. It’s time to let go.

In other news, Sony is reportedly eyeing Warner Bros. studios and IPs, and Final Fantasy 16 is in the final stretch of development.

EA may not have exclusivity over the Star Wars license anymore, but that isn’t stopping them creating several games set in that universe. The publisher has announced there are a total of three Star Wars games in development, although DICE is not one of those studios and Star Wars Battlefront III is not one of those games. In fact, Respawn is the studio leading development and production of all three projects.

The next wave of Star Wars games

EA has confirmed Respawn is currently working on the next game in the action adventure Star Wars Jedi franchise. Game Director Stig Asmussen is in charge of the upcoming title. Other details weren’t revealed today and we don’t even know if it will be called Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2 as many fans are expecting. Rumors suggest a full reveal for the game could happen on May 4 ahead of its potential release in Q4 2022.

The second game is also in development at Respawn. This time, Peter Hirschmann is the Game Director on an “all-new Star Wars first-person shooter game“. Hirschmann has quite a pedigree in Star Wars games as he was executive producer on the original Star Wars Battlefront titles. Work has only just begun on this title.

Finally, the third title is a strategy in development at a new studio called Bit Reactor. The studio was founded by Greg Foerstch, who was previously Art Director at Firaxis and has worked on games like XCOM 2, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, and the Civilization franchise.

So Star Wars Battlefront III isn’t in any of EA’s plans for now. Earlier reports suggest a pitch for the game was turned down due to licensing costs, and DICE is now busy trying to turn around the fortunes of beleagured shooter Battlefield 2042.

In other news, Final Fantasy XIV has returned to the PlayStation Store after a short break while Square Enix dealt with extreme server congestion. Elsewhere, Rebellion has announced a multiplayer invasion mode for Sniper Elite 5 similar to that seen in Deathloop.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2 is expected to release sometime in Q4 2022. Additionally, the game may be revealed in the near future. The rumor expects developer Respawn Entertainment to reveal the next sequel on May 4, 2022.

When is Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2 releasing?

According to credible industry insider Tom Henderson, the next Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order title will release in Q4 2022. Henderson states that things are “set in motion” for the game’s reveal. Notably, he states that the recent release date announcement of LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga adds credibility to the theory that Jedi: Fallen Order may be revealed on May 4th — the unofficial Star Wars day.

This also falls in line with previous rumors, which states that publisher Electronic Arts will reveal the game before E3 2022. Insider Jeff Grubb also predicted that the game would release from late 2022 to early 2023. The game is also expected to release for next-gen consoles and possibly the PS4 and Xbox One.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order originally released in 2019 for PS4 and Xbox One. The game follows Cal Kestis, a Jedi padawan after the purge of the Jedi. Imperial soldiers and Sith are hunting down Kestis, and he must fight and use his force powers to escape their grasp. Electronic Arts later released the game for next-gen consoles in Summer 2021.

In other news, Activision games are likely to stay cross-platform due to existing contracts with Sony. PlayStation console creator Ken Kutsuragi has also stated that he doesn’t care about metaverse or VR.

Rumor has it that Electronic Arts and Respawn Entertainment have planned a Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2 reveal ahead of E3 2022, in spring of this year.

The claim was made by industry insider Jeff Grubb during his Giant Bomb show. “Expect to hear about the game in a significant way before E3,” Grubb said. Jedi: Fallen Order 2 is likely to be in development for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. However, a PS4 version isn’t outside the realm of possibility.

When will EA announce Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2 release date?

Grubb has speculated a release window of either late 2022 or sometime early 2023. The original game was announced during E3 2018 and released in November 2019. If the sequel follows the same trajectory, we’re looking at a mid-late 2023 release.

If Grubb is right and Jedi: Fallen Order 2 release is set for 2022, EA might announce the release date at EA Play. However, if it’s set for a 2023 release, then we’ll get a release window at best.

A 2022 release seems unlikely especially considering the ongoing pandemic. However, the game may have been in development for quite some time. Job listings dating back to 2019 suggested as much.

Opinion: Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2 release signals a change within EA

Zarmena writes… It’s hard to forget the treatment EA meted out to Amy Hennig’s Star Wars project at the now-defunct EA Visceral. The company infamously held the stance that it needs to keep abreast with market trends and a single-player Star Wars game wouldn’t have the same scope as a multiplayer game. Funnily enough, Star Wars Battlefront II‘s launch was a disaster and Respawn’s single-player Star Wars sold like hot cakes. Looks like EA’s had a change of heart since then.

In other news, Horizon Forbidden West is almost upon us and we recently learned about a mysterious new villain. Speaking of villains, Pagan Min is headed to Far Cry 6 in DLC form next week.

The rumors were true, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order did indeed get a PS5 version today, a free upgrade for all owners of the PS4 version. This new-gen version of the game brings higher resolution textures and assets, 4K resolution with HDR, improves the 60fps performance of the game, and has significantly faster loading times thanks to optimizations with the SSD. But perhaps the biggest news around the PS5 version of the game is its native compatibility with your save from the PS4 version.

With past releases, the PS5 version of any game counted as a whole new application and executable, with which save data from the previous PS4 version was not compatible. This resulted in players needing to have the PS4 version installed somewhere, update the game, upload the save data using an in-game save transfer, then retrieve that save from within the PS5 version of the game. We’ve seen this cumbersome system again and again with games like Marvel’s Avengers, Crash Bandicoot 4, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 and 2, and many more games that have received cross-gen upgrades. It was assumed that this was due to a limitation with how the PS5 applications read the save files.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order PS5, however, is compatible with your PS4 save file without the need to go through a convoluted process. The only extra step you’ll need to take is importing the data into the PS5 version, but you won’t need the PS4 version of the game to do it. The PS4 save simply need to be in your system storage.

On PlayStation 5, ensure your console has the PS4 save data on system storage (either from previous PS4 version playtime on the console, download from Cloud storage, or transfer via USB stick).  From there, there will be a “Import PS4 System Save Data” prompt on the start-up screen.  Simply select that option and you will be able to utilize your older save data.

When you transfer your save over, you’ll unlock all of the Trophies you’ve already earned on PS4 for the PS5 version of the game. You’ll need to find a meditation area to save the game to trigger the unlocks, however.

Players of the PS4 version automatically qualify for a free upgrade. If you have the digital version of the game, your entitlements will transfer over and you can download the PS5 version now. If you have a physical version, you’ll have to have the disc in your PS5 to get the new-gen version. However, if you happen to have the Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order disc, but an all-digital PS5, you can submit a ticket to EA to show proof of purchase and receive a digital upgrade code.

If you don’t already own the previous gen version, you can buy the acclaimed Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order PS5 now for just $39.99.

Reports have surfaced that video game retailers across the UK have received the PS5 version of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and the game is expected to release this Friday on June 11, 2021. A source speaking to TheGamer states that Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order PS5 will release on June 11. Furthermore, EA will shadow drop both the physical editions and upgrade version of the game on the same day.

Strangely, there are no scheduled announcements or events on June 11, which may point to an announcement on social media or YouTube. Previously, the game was announced for a broad summer 2021 release, but a concrete date has not been announced officially.  The PS5 version also showed up on the German rating board’s website back in March. While PS4 versions of the game received an update that optimized the game for next-gen consoles back in April 2021, it did not add any enhancements.

With the next-gen version, however, we’ll likely be seeing the game take full advantage of the PS5’s hardware. Additionally, EA has confirmed that owners of the last-gen versions of the game will receive a free next-gen upgrade. And with UK retail stores confirmed to have the game in stock, fans of the franchise will still be able to snag a physical copy if they missed out on the last-gen version.

According to EA, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order has performed incredibly well in sales, reaching over 10 million unique players just after launch despite being a single-player title. Back in January 2021, the company reported that the game had “exceeded expectations” after selling a total of 8 million units. It also added that the game will be the first in a new franchise. While no confirmed sequel has been announced, Respawn Entertainment has released updates for the game in the past that added a new game plus as well as customization options.

We’ll continue to keep readers updated on the next-gen release of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.

Star Wars day isn’t until May 4, but some news won’t wait. The StarWars.com team has revealed all of the themed content players can expect from a variety of console games over the next few months. The biggest piece of news was that Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order will be making its way to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S this summer.

Rumors surrounding the possibility of a new-gen release had been circling since the game was rated for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in Germany last month. Jedi: Fallen Order will be released on these platforms this summer with “a number of technical improvements.” Those who already own the game on PS4 or Xbox One will get a free next-gen upgrade. More details on the next-gen version and its assorted enhancements have been promised “soon.”

In the meantime, the PS4 version has already been optimized for play on PS5 through backwards compatibility. In addition, both the standard and Deluxe Editions of this version will be on sale on the PlayStation Store until May 12, and buying either will give you free access to the PS5 version when it releases. This isn’t the only Star Wars game to be put on sale either. Star Wars Battlefront II, Star Wars: Episode I Racer, Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, Star Wars: Squadrons, and Star Wars Pinball are all discounted until May 12 too.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order has been fairly successful, reaching 10 million unique players and had surpassing 8 million units sold at the start of 2020, far exceeding publisher EA’s expectations for the game. EA has confirmed the game is the first in a new franchise. Despite losing their exclusive rights over the Star Wars franchise, the publisher has confirmed they will continue to make Star Wars titles in the future and one of those titles is heavily rumored to be a sequel to Jedi: Fallen Order.

Gematsu has spotted listings for Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order‘s PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions on the German rating board’s website. While the game received an update for current-gen consoles back in January, a full release has not been announced.

Jedi: Fallen Order first launched for last-gen consoles and PC in November 2019 to positive critic and user reception. Despite being a single-player game, it reached 10 million players by summer 2020. Publisher Electronic Arts, often criticized for canceling projects in pursuit of multiplayer and live service experiences, later said that Jedi: Fallen Order was not only a sales success, but also the first game in a new franchise.

In January, LucasFilm ended its exclusivity deal with EA to develop Star Wars video games. However, the publisher will continue making more games in the universe.

“We’re really proud of the games we have created with EA,” Douglas Reilly, VP of Lucasfilm Games, said. “We will continue working with them and our relationship has never been stronger. While we may not have a lot of details to share at the moment, we’ve got a number of projects underway with the talented teams at EA.”

“We love Star Wars,” added EA. “We look forward to continuing our partnership with LucasFilm Games. We’re making more Star Wars games, BD-1 is still the cutest.”

EA’s next Star Wars project is currently under wraps. As far as Jedi: Fallen Order‘s PS5 version is concerned, we’ll update our readers when an official announcement is made.
