PS Plus Essential May 2023 games will go live on Tuesday, May 2nd

If billbil-kun’s leak is correct (and we have no reason to believe it won’t be, considering their excellent track record), all of the aforementioned games will be yours to keep starting Tuesday, May 2nd, as long as you have an active PS Plus subscription.

Released last year, GRID: Legends needs no introduction. We nominated it for PlayStation LifeStyle’s Sports/Racing Game of the Year award in 2022 because of the variety of its tracks, vehicle options, and the fact that it caters to all types of racing fans.

Chivalry 2 is another excellent addition to the line-up. The multiplayer hack-and-slash action video game can be played in both first-person and third-person, and offers players some medieval melee fun.

Last but not least, Descenders is a cycling video game that originally released in 2019 to favorable reviews. It’s a fun romp for those into extreme sports games, which remain a niche genre.

More than 50 PS Plus Premium trials now available

The addition of MLB The Show 23 to the list today makes a total of 52 PS Plus Premium trials available to subscribers. The trial offers the entire game up for players to try, including Diamond Dynasty and Road to the Show, for a maximum of three hours.

After entering early access on April 18, Disney Speedstorm introduced a two-hour trial for PS Plus Premium members. While the game will be going free-to-play in the future, players currently need to purchase Founder’s Packs to gain further access to the game once the trial is over. However, PS Plus members can also grab a free Exclusive Pack that includes the Jack Sparrow Sterling Duelist Suit, Jack Sparrow Sea Vandals Livery, and Sea Vandals Avatar.

Finally, DE-EXIT Eternal Matters was a surprise addition and isn’t even included in Sony’s list of PS Plus game trials. The voxel-style game offers a combination of puzzles, stealth, platforming, and action but players only get one hour to try out the game before the trial expires.

As usual, if you decide to purchase the games after the trial period, your progress will be carried over.

This month on PS Plus is Bethesda galore – a bit ironic considering the ongoing spat between Microsoft (who now owns Bethesda) and Sony Interactive Entertainment over the former’s impending acquisition of Activision Blizzard. But we digress.

Value of PS Plus April 2023 games

Reddit user kabirsingh84 has kindly compiled a list of all the games included in all three PS Plus tiers in April 2023, and their latest sale price (note: this isn’t MSRP). Based on this, PS Plus Essential offers $58.52 worth of games this month, Extra offers $127.89 worth of games, and Premium/Deluxe offers an additional $15.96 worth of classics (on top of Extra games for a total value of $143.85).

Unlike Extra and Premium games, Essential games are yours to keep as long as you have an active subscription, so that’s something worth considering as well.

As a reminder, we advise folks with Essential membership to claim games (like Sackboy: A Big Adventure this month) via the Essential tier and avoid claiming duplicates via Extra/Premium subscription should they ever upgrade in the future. Doing so will override your Essential license, making you lose access to games once they leave the Extra and Premium catalogs.

Marvel’s Spider-Man will leave PS Plus Extra and Premium on May 15, 2023

Sony has never promised to keep its first-party games on PS Plus on a permanent basis. Despite this, fans have noted that the timing of Spider-Man’s removal is peculiar.

Spider-Man will leave the service on May 15th. According to credible leakers, Sony has a major PlayStation showcase scheduled in June, ahead of the Summer Games Fest. With Spider-Man 2 set to release later this year (reportedly September), Sony is expected to begin a major marketing push for the sequel to one of its biggest console exclusives to date.

As a result, removing Spider-Man from PS Plus ahead of Spider-Man 2’s marketing push hasn’t gone down well with fans, who’ve concluded that Sony probably expects to make bank with a spike in the first game’s sales. This is especially noteworthy because Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is expected to hit theaters in June.

Marvel’s Spider-Man to be removed from PS Plus

Marvel’s Spider-Man joins Resident Evil and NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 as the three games that will be leaving the PS Plus Game Catalog in May.

For those who want to keep track of games that will soon be leaving, the handy “Last chance to play section” on the PlayStation Plus > Collections page on PS5 or PlayStation Plus > Games > Games Catalog page on PS4 is the place to go.

Players have until May 15 to get their fill of Marvel’s Spider-Man and the other games exiting the Game Catalog. That’s just over a month to swing about New York City, fighting crime as the friendly neighborhood webhead. Just make sure you’ve had your fill when that day rolls around, as the game might not appear on PS Plus again for quite some time.

As for what the PS Plus Essential game lineup looks like for May, here are our predictions for which titles will be featured.

PS Plus May 2023 monthly games predictions

• Cuphead (PS4)
• Death‘s Door (PS5/PS4)

Saints Row suffered a disappointing launch, leaving the franchise in a state of limbo. While it was only released last year, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see it pop up in the Essentials lineup. Cuphead and Death’s Door are both overdue on PS Plus, so those get my other votes.

With Sackboy finally featured this month, the next hottest fan-requested title has to be Spyro: The Reignited Trilogy. Perhaps we’ll see it featured in May!

While waiting for the upcoming May games, make sure you’ve got April’s titles added to your library. They include Meet Your Maker, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, and Tails of Iron.
