This year, sports fans had plenty of games to keep them busy. Whether you fancy racers, hitting the links, or pulling off some skateboard tricks, 2022 delivered a little of everything. In addition to the next entry in the beloved Gran Turismo series, fans also had a chance to experience something new and unique with games like Cursed to Golf. Whatever sport you gravitate to, it’s always fun to experience its gaming analog. So here are the Best Sports and Racing Games of 2022.

5. GRID Legends

Grid Legends is a unique racer that packs over 130 tracks to compete on. That includes real-life locations like the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Suzuka International Racing Course, with more than 100 vehicles to choose from.

Drift cars, electric vehicles, stadium trucks — you name it, it’s here. You can even create custom races with your own routes down to personalized rules. It has a little something for all racing fans, including a narrative-based career mode and support for 22-player multiplayer.

4. Cursed to Golf

It can be challenging to make golf appeal to all audiences, but the sports-centric roguelike Cursed to Golf manages to do just that.

Its wacky narrative forces a deceased golfer to complete an 18-hole course in Golf Purgatory if they want to come back to life. But the ghostly Scotsman warns them that if they use too many strokes on a single hole, they’ll need to return to the beginning of the course. With 70 different predesigned levels and truly out-there environments to golf in, this is one take on the classic sport that feels unique in just about every way.

3. Need for Speed: Unbound

The Need for Speed franchise has seen several style evolutions over the years, but none so much as Need for Speed Unbound.

With developer Criterion returning for its first title since 2012’s Most Wanted, it makes for arcade-style racing that feels great out of the gate. The heavily stylized art style combines cel shading and realism in ways that look and feel impossibly cool. Its story-based adventure raises the stakes, and street racing missions combined with the open world to explore make this Need for Speed one of our favorite racers of the year – oh, and the customizable anime wraps for the cars help, too.

2. Gran Turismo 7

When it comes to racing sims, no one does it quite like the Gran Turismo series, and Gran Turismo 7 was an especially excellent installment.

With the return of its single-player campaign, it provides more than just great racing. It also builds a fun narrative that helps players learn about the cars they’re driving and gives them a reason to keep pushing. With over 400 cars to collect and dozens of tracks to race on, this is the premier racing sim experience of the year and our runner-up for our favorite sports or racing game of 2022.

And the winner is…

1. OlliOlli World

OlliOlli World GOTY

OlliOlli World is an ambitious skateboarding simulator where the entire world of Radlandia is a skate park. Crafted by the in-game gods of skating themselves, there are rails to grind and kickflips to perform wherever you look. Roll7 has crafted an addictive 2D platformer that seamlessly incorporates skateboarding in just about every fiber of its being.

Pulling off tricks feels effortless, and you feel like a veritable pro skater with each completed challenge. There’s so much to explore and plenty to accomplish, and you’ll spend hours working to do it all. With its wacky environments, endearing pixel art, and accessibility for players of all ages, it’s easy to see why we’ve selected OlliOlli World as our favorite sports game of 2022.

EA and Codemasters plan to release new footage of the racing title GRID Legends, as well as the game’s official release date on December 3, 2021, at 4 PM UTC. In addition to new gameplay, fans can also expect to see new features, cars, and locations during the premiere. GRID Legends is expected to release sometime in 2022 for the PS4 and PS5, Xbox, and PC.

Codemasters gave fans a brief teaser via a Twitter announcement, showing off in-game footage of an overturned car sending sparks across the road. Up until now, we’ve only seen footage of some of the game’s live-action portions. The reveal will be broadcast via the official GRID YouTube channel.

The game’s campaign mode, known as the GRID World Series, will blend documentary-style live-action segments will racing gameplay. As a racer participating in the GRID World Series, the player will go head-to-head against the world’s most skilled drivers. From an ambitious five-time champion looking to break a world record to a driver intent on becoming the first woman champion, there will be plenty of challengers for the title.

GRID Legends was originally announced earlier this year. In addition to over 100 vehicles ranging from touring cars to big rigs, the game will also feature a mixture of real and fictional racing tracks from around the world. Director Chris Smith then followed up the announcement with more details, revealing that GRID‘s nemesis system would make a return. Players can also choose to upgrade their cars. While specifics on how the mechanic will work have not been announced, fans can expect to see some of those details explained at the upcoming gameplay reveal.

Electronic Arts acquired developer Codemasters back in Late 2020 for $1.2 billion, and GRID Legends will be the first title to release since the acquisition. EA also expects to release at least one racing game every year.

EA and Codemasters have revealed the next instalment in the GRID franchise at this years EA Play Live show. GRID Legends will feature a campaign and Race Creator that lets players create their own races in both track and road environments. The game will arrive on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 next year.

The game’s campaign, known as the GRID World Series, puts players in the middle of a fly-on-the-wall documentary that blends real-life footage with gameplay. Ravenwest Motorsport and their drivers, the McKanes, wants to capture a record sixth World Championship. Players must overcome internal team politics and rivalries with a dozen drivers to stop that from happening. Off the track each of the important characters will be played by actors such as Sex Education‘s Ncuti Gatwa, while on it they’ll benefit from unique driver personality AI for more unpredictable racing.

More than 100 vehicles will be available in GRID Legends, including single-seaters, big rigs, and classic touring cars. The vehicles cover a number of motorsport eras as seen by the vehicles featured in the trailer like the Shelby Cobra 289 FIA, Audi A4 Quattro BTCC, and Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR Pro Concept. Each of these vehicles can be upgraded, although Codemasters promised more details on this at a later date.

GRID Legends will launch with 130 tracks, featuring a mix of real-life locations like Brands Hatch and Indianapolis as well as  fictional favorites from previous GRID titles like San Francisco and Paris. There will be new tracks too, including the Moscow and London tracks that appeared briefly in the trailer.

As well as the campaign there will be other modes such as the fan favorite Drift events and a new race creator tool that lets players create whatever racing event they wish. Mix up the classes, pick a track, choose the number of laps and even tweak the weather conditions before taking the events online to compete against other players.

GRID Legends will be the first title in the franchise since Codemasters was acquired by EA. The game is part of the publisher’s plan to release at least one racing game each year, and GRID Legends is currently heading for release in 2022 on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC.
